More Busy Times

Excerpt from More Busy Times Reader Story
"The Doll Story"

There was once a little girl named Mary. Mary was not a healthy girl, and had to stay in bed most of the time. She was not strong enough to run and play like other children.

Mary had a brother named Willie. Willie was as healthy as Mary was sick. He ran and jumped and played and did all the other things boys his age like to do. Willie should have been happy, but he wasn't.

Often when people came to Mary and Willie's family, they gave Mary gifts. These gifts were often games Mary could play in bed, or books with nice pictures to look at, or some other toys.

Willie thought it wasn't fair that people gave Mary gifts, and didn't give him any. The more he thought about it, the more jealous he felt.

One night Willie's dad saw how unhappy Willie looked. "What's wrong, Willie? Are you sick?" he asked.

"No, I'm not sick," said Willie.

"Then what is wrong?" asked Dad. "You do not look happy."

"How can I be happy when Mary gets so many gifts and I do not get any?" asked Willie. "It is not fair."

"You are enjoying the biggest gift of all, Willie," said Dad. "You have a gift that Mary does not have."
